BREAKING NEWS & BLOG

THIS FEATURE ENDS TO-DAY                                                             Fri. Nov. 13th 2009.

Breaking News was a new feature that we started back in July of 2009. The idea was to submit a running commentary or "Blog" of people, places, and events as they happened and not after the fact. This way you were alerted to most items your Board has been working on from day to day. A well-educated membership is a strong membership.

From a risk management point of view, many hazards were noted as soon as we learned of possible dangers. All meetings were announced ahead of time and attendance was always brisk for which we thank those who attended. Explaining signage and how it works helped a lot of newcomers to our area. When the call came to support road openings the council chambers were full of our supporters.

Our slogan ends with Kawartha ATV Association..."and where nature is respected." These items were usually of a humorous type but the message always came through loud and clear...We are a responsible organisation and the public realises this fact.

We hope you have benefited from what this feature has offered and look forward to starting up "Breaking News" again on April 1st. 2010. In the meantime, don't forget our main website is always current and we urge you to check out the various Blocks that are full of very important data that has been entered for your consideration.

If this was your first visit to "Breaking News" please scroll back and enjoy.

SEASONS GREETINGS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM YOUR KATVA BREAKING NEWS TEAM

F.A.Q.
I'm seeing forbidden gates opening in the Five Points.    Thurs. Nov. 12th 2009.
Can I go in?

No way. Sorry, but these gates lead through private property trails only available to snowmobilers.

Twin Mountains S.C and the Buckhorn District S.C. will start to explore what has transpired over the summer once the deer hunt ends. They regularly take in various pieces of equipment to prepare these closed off trails.

This in no way means we can use them. Once again please familiarise yourself with the "Trespass To Property Act."

F.A.Q.
Why are some gates starting to open on the VRTC?             Tues. Nov. 10th 2009.

The Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club will soon check their entire trail system for missing signs and any hazard that may hinder sight lines for the upcoming season. It is not an invitation to take a side-by-side out for a tour. Our rules stay in effect.

Also some gates were opened to facilitate hunters being able to take their rigs to their camps via the Rail Line. This is their legal right.

Did you know that the deer population in Pennsylvania is so large that hunters are issued with 2 tags? The deer there are also smaller than ours due to available food sources.

WE STAND CORRECTED.                                                                   Sun. Nov. 8th 2009.

One of our trail wardens just returned from patrolling the Rail Line. He spoke to a hunter from the Pinery.

From him we learned that the deer hunt does not start each day at sunrise as we previously reported but in fact starts 1/2 hour before sunrise and ends 1/2 hour after sunset. We want to report any inaccuracies as we find them.

SMALL TURNOUT AS SEASON WINDS DOWN.                             Thurs. Nov. 5th 2009.

Of our 16 club directors only 5 managed to get to Omemee for the general meeting last night. Also in attendance were 10 loyal and regular members-at-large who added much to the various topics that crop up on a regular basis.

Most items on the agenda from the last Director's meeting have been announced as Breaking News over the last months but several new items are worth mentioning.

1.It is thought that holding all meetings on the first Wednesday of each month may make it easier to attract more members.
2.Newsletters are expensive and labour intensive. One will be published with all updates and be sent out to current members in time for the AGM in February 2010.
3.We must find a way to keep members up to date who do not have the internet. Numbers are unknown. Possibly friends can phone them periodically or they can take a peak at someone else's computer.
4. The Alliance with HATVA will be renewed for 2010 unless otherwise noted.
5. Our President Kerrie Wright is stepping down. A new President will be voted in from the existing Board at the AGM.

There was one item that was not resolved and that is "Do road links stay open after Nov. 30 when the trails close?" It was assumed that this was not written into the by-law. We will research this and have the correct answer before the season ends. The question was put to the Board..".Why have the link through Fenelon Falls, for example, stay open when the VRTC is closed?"

GENERAL MEETING TOMORROW.                                     Tues. Nov. 3rd. 2009.

We are all alive and well. Please join us for our year end General Meeting at the Omemee Coronation Hall at 7 p.m. tomorrow Wed. Nov. 4th.

There are only 3 weeks left of riding anywhere. The Rail Line closes Nov. 30th and all snowmobile clubs take over their trails on Dec. 1st. Why not say hello and thanks to the Directors who put in the time and effort to run the club untiringly since May 1st.

Coronation Hall is at 1 King St. W. CoKL Service Centre, Omemee.

The next chance to get together will be the Annual General Meeting in February 2010.

GIVE IT UP FOR THE DEER HUNTERS.                                           Sat. Oct. 31st. 2009

The hunt starts at daybreak on Mon. Nov. 2nd (standard time) and runs non-stop till Saturday Nov.14th. Yes, it includes the Sunday in between. We have to be concerned with the 5 Points.

In the lobby of the MNR office in Minden are a set of maps with a scale of 50,000/1. To put that in perspective there is a set of co-ordinates that show a black dot where a red-tailed hawk's nest was found. It is near Bass Lake Rd. and White Valley Road. We mention this to show the length to which the MNR takes their responsibility of cataloguing all inhabitants.

The big news is of course that all lands on these MNR maps from CR36 north to well past Crystal Lake Rd. and from the west bank of Bass Lake Rd. over to CR49 is shaded and labelled as the "Bass Lake wintering yard for white-tailed deer."

It's no wonder that a string of well over a dozen hunt camps are daisy-chained all up through this area. It's not open to ATVing but any snowmobiler will tell you that deer sightings are common all winter.

If you insist on going anyway please watch for apples stuck on twigs about 5 feet off the ground along a trail. Hunters do this ahead of time to "bait" the deer. Each camp has a zone and you may be heading for danger.

Here's a chilling thought to leave you with. The five Points is zoned for high-powered long distance rifles... OUCH!

JINGLE BELLS...JINGLE BELLS...JINGLE ALL THE WAY...    Fri. Oct. 30th 2009.

....  Oh what fun it is to log onto www.twinmountainssc.ca website because 2010 Snowmobile Trail Permits are available on line effective to-day.

You'll recall a Breaking News story in the summer that online permit purchases were withdrawn for security improvements. (see BN Fri. Aug. 2nd 2009.)

This has now been cleared up and TMSC asked that we post this reminder on our site because we are still active and many of our members are sledders too and deserve to be among the first to know.

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES                                                 Fri. Oct. 30th 2009.

In case you missed it on the Home Page, The Kawartha ATV Association is looking for 5 new Directors to sit on the board for the upcoming season.  If you are interested in being a part of our team, please contact Steve Lane

NOTE: AGM date is to be finalized in early November and is tentatively scheduled for Sat. Feb. 20, 2010 /gh

PORKY'S BRIDGE NOW REPAIRED.                                          Thurs. Oct. 29th 2009.

As reported a while back, the bridge on Twin Mountains S.C. Trail #420 was impassable.

It is now ready for use once again. Please remember that this bridge connects many hunt camps in the Crystal Lake area and will be busy starting this weekend as deer hunters set up for the Monday Nov. 2nd opening.

For the Breaking News thread regarding this story please refer back to Sept. 20th...Sept. 23rd. and Oct. 3rd. 2009.

CAN YOU HOLD IT JUST A LITTLE LONGER?                           Wed. Oct. 29th 2009.

It's not much news but we want you to know that the following was in the agenda of the CoKL Forest User's Group Somerville Tract Sept. 23rd. meeting.

There were a total of 11 "Trails Infrstructure Projects" listed. Number 6 reads...

Vault Toilets (North & South Staging areas.)

The north staging area is at CR 45 and 503.
The south staging area is at Somerville 3rd line and the VRTC.

That's all we have sofar.

When it works its way up the list to Number 2...we're in business.

PULL THROUGH RIG PARKING AT BEACH PARK                     Tues. Oct. 27th 2009.

Every summer at Garnet Graham Park in Fenelon Falls, CoKL Rec. staff install attractive concrete flower boxes to form a barrier from one street to the next. This slows down cars when children are playing.

It was the right thing to do but left us with difficult choices to get our rigs out late Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

You'll be pleased to know that these flower boxes have now been removed for the winter. We can now pull in from Francis St. and exit via Bond St thereby not having to negotiate difficult and potentially dangerous U Turns.

SHOCKING THEFT IN LINDSAY AREA.                                            Sat. Oct. 24th 2009.

Not all area residents see each and every news article. This is also for our members who live in the GTA.   We quote Kawartha Lakes This Week Tuesday Oct. 20th 2009 edition.

Kawartha Lakes Police Service are asking for the public's help to solve a break and enter on Opmar Road where three ATV,four dirt bikes and a trailer were stolen.

Police say a garage on the property, south of Thunder Bridge Road was broken into sometime between October 13 and 16. Stolen items include a red 2007 Arctic Cat ATV with a 400 cc engine, a green 2006 Arctic Cat ATV with the same size engine, and a third Arctic Cat ATV, green with a 90 cc. engine.

Four dirt bikes were also stolen, including a blue Yamaha with a 50 cc. engine, and three Hondas. A red bike with an 80 cc. engine, a 2006 red and white bike with a 100 cc. engine and a red 2009 bike with a 150 cc engine.

In addition to the ATVs and dirt bikes, a 2009 North Trail galvanized steel trailer with a wooden slated deck, side and rear ramp with lic. plate F1691X and tools, tires and clothing.

If you hear of a kid who just bought some cheap dirt bike clothing, that might be the clue to break the case.

We also know of one case regarding theft of an ATV on a trailer in Oshawa. The trailer was found abandoned several weeks later not far from the crime scene.

For all police action in our area please refer to www.crimealerts.net.

TREE SPOTTING NO. 2.                                                                          Fri. Oct. 23rd.2009.

You're gonna' have to be quick to catch this trick of Mother Nature.

Evergreens are supposed to be ever green. Not so...the Tamarack tree is an exception. Technically it is a Deciduous Conifer (sorry about that). Every spring this spindly 'ever'green sprouts small clumps of bright green needles. Once summer hits they blend in rather well, quite often amongst spruce, fir and hemlock. Then when the cold fall weather sets in the needles turn a brilliant gold and drop off.

This is happening right now and can be witnessed along CoKL Road 8 from Hwy 35 to Argyle by car particularly in the wet areas. Don't confuse them with straight deciduous trees like maple.birch, aspen and others that go gold. If it doesn't look like an evergreen, then you're looking at the wrong tree.

By ATV they're common in the wet area on the VRTC above Somerville 3rd. Once you learn to pick them out you'll wonder how you've missed them each fall.

Point them out to your family but you might want to leave out the part about Deciduous Conifer.

Kawartha ATV Association...and where nature is respected.

"THE ROADS IN DYSART ARE NOW OPEN."                                  Wed. Oct.21st. 2009.

This direct quote just came to us from Steven Skidmore, President of our alliance partner, Haliburton ATV Association.

There are four Townships in Haliburton County and Dysart was the only holdback for some years. Here are the only 2 exceptions.

1.Still off-limits is Highland St. from Dysart St.(by the L.C.B.O.) to Cedar Avenue(by the Echo office.)
2. Highway 118 under Bill 316 is closed from County Road 14 to Sunneyside Street, open through town and closed from South Street to Fred Jones Road.

Our job? We must respect the effort HATVA has put into this accomplishment by learning the whereabouts of these exceptions before we go.Also keep in mind that the Haliburton section of the Rail Line closes at dusk. These days that is a little after 6 p.m.

Are your headlights and tail lights in good working order?

TRY NOT TO LOOK LIKE A MOOSE.                                                Tues. Oct.20th 2009.

The moose season opened yesterday morning at daybreak and runs till Friday at sundown. There were three rigs at Timmy's in Bobcaygeon Saturday morning. The hunters said they were on their way to Grundy Lake (Haliburton area). They all had ATVs in tow.
A cottager from Echo Bay on Sturgeon Lake left for his buddy's camp on Eel's Lake for 3 days.

That means 8 hunters (with 3 hounds) were identified  in just a span of 10 minutes. Who knows what else is in the mix for this week. Also bear in mind that The Buckhorn District Snowmobile Club has a trail up in the higher elevations of the 5 Points called "the Moose Trail".Go figure.

Do you see a pattern forming here? Why don't we all just let the hunters have their five days that they wait for each year and we can pick it up again on Saturday?

There is one week of no hunting and then the deer hunters move on Nov. 2nd. More on that later.

LINDSAY LINK IS DO-ABLE.                                                               Mon. Oct. 19th 2009.

Last Tuesday's presentation to CoKL Council went well with a proposal to construct a recreational bridge across the Scugog River. This is several years away but it's now written into the minutes of the Tuesday Oct. 13th, 2009 meeting thanks to KATVA.

For immediate consideration, club execs. at the same meeting, have worked out 3 possible routes through Lindsay to link the V.R.T.C and presented all three to Council. Our Club has one route that is preferable and Council will have staff investigate the pros and cons of each.

Council told us that we must hold a public meeting regarding the chosen route to get feedback from area citizens. Then it's back to Council Chambers for that all important vote.

FALL COLOUR RIDE IN THE 5 POINTS                                          Sun. Oct. 18th 2009.

Our season wrap up Club Ride was a great way to end the club season. The weather cooperated and though a tad cool in the morning we quickly warmed up once we started riding.

19 ATV's did the outside loop. 65km Route, 7-minute, E108, Loom Lake, Moose , then Lunch at Picard Lake, E108, Old Logging Road. It was a nice scenic ride and the fall colours are just  spectacular.

My Camera appears to have bit the dust somewhere along the way and I only have a couple of pics of us having fun. (donated by one of the members - thanks Bud). Pic 1, Pic 2
I'll see if I can round up some more in the coming weeks.

There is still lots of riding oportunities left so I wouldn't put the ATV away just yet, but keep in mind that the "Hunt is On", and Hunters are out all over the 5-points (and elsewhere too), so those heading in there please be extra attentive and wear lots of Orange.

SEASON RIDE WRAP UP IS TOMORROW.                                       Fri. Oct. 16th 2009.

And the winner is...the Five Points.

What better place could there be in all of central Ontario than the 5 Points to witness fall in all its glory.  The area is close by which helps as the daylight hours dwindle. There are some challenges due to recent rains so we urge you to dress accordingly.

Meet at Tim Horton's in Bobcaygeon at 9 a.m. or up Bass Lake Rd at 9.30 a.m. Bring a (hot?) lunch and don't forget your camera.

Details are listed on our website under "Rides and Events".

BREAKING NEWS - ARCHIVES                                                           Thur. Oct. 15th 2009.

Well, as expected we finally ran out of room on this page for all our Breaking News Articles.
It will be neccessary to split off the older Articles into seperate pages.  Don't worry they will still all be accessible online.

We will attempt to keep 6-8 weeks worth here at all times and the rest you will find thru links at the bottom of this page.   ______________________________________________________________________________
WE'RE INNOCENT...AS USUAL.                                                         Wed. Oct. 14th 2009.

Our bond with Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club grows stronger as the season changes over from ATVing to snowmobiling. On Saturday Oct. 10th we wrote about trespassing on snowmobile trails due to dealers giving out snowmobile maps to ATVers. (Please see Breaking News dated Saturday Oct. 10th 2009.)

This was prompted by an article in a news release from the OFSC called "Main Trail". Twin Mountains S.C. has just sent us an email to reassure us that the "Main Trail" article was of a generic nature and TMSC assures us we are not the guilty ones. Please read their response to us and we quote as follows.

"Thanks KATVA for putting this information on your Website. The district office put out this statement on behalf of O.F.S.C. due to a lot of atvs running on private trails where there were no gates, only signs.

We at Twin Mountains S.C. can safely say that you guys have done a tremendous job at patrolling our area. We are proud to say we have not received a single complaint regarding trespassing on private lands. Thank you Kawartha ATV Association."

OOPS DEPT.                                                                                              Tues. Oct. 13th. 2009.

We apologise for stating that the deposition shown below was to be tomorrow (Wednesday) when in fact it has already been presented this afternoon.(Tuesday).

As soon as a reaction from the CoKL Council has been received, it will be mentioned right here on Breaking News.

BRIDGE DEPOSITION GOES TO COUNCIL TOMORROW.         Tues. Oct. 13th 2009.

Our very own Gord Ferguson who is also a member of the Trails Advisory Committee, makes a plea to CoKL council to consider a bridge for ATVs and snowmobiles to be built across the Scugog River at the site of the old pillars.

Also, a recommendation to create a temporary route through Lindsay will be put forth so as to make Bethany to Kinmount a non-stop reality.

Please attend if you are in town. Council meeting starts Wed. Oct. 14th 2009 at 1 p.m. but quite often the first hour is a closed session.

THERE IS NO BAD WEATHER...JUST BAD CLOTHING.           Sun. Oct. 11th 2009.

This is for that odd ATVer who still wears cotton as a base garment...then jeans...and on top something heavy. Wrong!

The slightest strenuous activity when you are bundled up like this will make you sweat...things like unloading your rig or moving a branch off the trail. Once cotton gets damp it holds the cold and you will shiver all day.    Enter synthetic fabrics.

All the outdoor stores this time of year will have piles of either Polyester or Polypropylene base garments.(Tops and bottoms). Start with these and THEN add your warmth layer. The thickness depends on the weather. Finally put on a nylon shell or windproof jacket of some sort. It quite often is nylon tightly woven. Check out Gortex but bring lots of $$$.

Costco just got in a big load of Paradox Base garments. They're meant to be tight fitting. If you look like a ballerina when you put them on, you're on your way.

THROW AWAY YOUR SNOWMOBILE MAP                                       Sat. Oct. 10th 2009.

From a recent publication put out by the OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs), we find the following statement which is worth repeating in part.

"It became apparent that some powersports dealers and hospitality operators are providing information to ATV owners that could be harmful to snowmobiling such as providing snowmobile trail guides or encouraging riding on OFSC trails.

Obviously, this kind of misinformation can result in problems for local clubs, including trail closures on private land due to ATV trespass."

Kawartha ATV association has produced an authorized ATV trail guide last year and a new one is currently at the printer. We urge you to take the time to pick up our new map as soon as it arrives at the dealer showrooms. The map is offered free of charge. Please check out the sponsors who made this possible.

MYSTERY RIDE IN THE PINERY.                                                        Fri. Oct. 9th 2009.

Trail conditions change after a few rainy days. We have word from the ride coordinator however that tomorrow's ride will take place commencing from Thunderbridge Rd. and proceeding north on the Rail Line into Burnt River village where the second leader will join the group.

From there it's anybody's guess but the area is very well known to these two veterans of the Pinery and it usually holds some surprises. With some luck, it may be possible to view the old boiler in the bush. This is an undeveloped trail and is not open to the public until risk signs are installed. The meeting is at 9 a.m. on Thunderbridge Rd. but you can wait for the group further up the Line if that is where you usually stage.

Please check our Rides and Events section for phone contacts and Happy Thanksgiving.

"KATVA IS IN THE FOREFRONT BUT..."                              NOON  Wed. Oct. 7th 2009.

Peterborough County Council stumbles on length of road links. " You want CR 507 from Flynn's Corner to Haliburton County line?" That's not a link, that's trail." states one councillor.
Our request for Bobcaygeon to Hwy 28 on CR36 didn't make the popularity poll either. (These two  road links measure well over 25 kms. each.)

Aside from these observations, the meeting went extremely well as our veteran spokeman Steve Lane read off a prepared speech in order to keep within the time frame and not leave out any of our club's vast accomplishments.

Reeve Tom Flynn (GCH) Townships in which the 5 Points Trail system is located, made a plea to County Council to look at all user groups and consider the big picture. He stated that opening fragmented County roads in his jurisdiction and then hearing similar depositions at other Townships on a random basis will complicate the end result.

The matter was turned back to Council to seek input from various ATV clubs and stakeholders from all Townships in Peterborough County.

CHEX Television was on site. They interviewed Steve Lane extensively, and then got a statement from The Mayor.
Tune in at 6.p.m. and let's just see how we did.

PLEASE STAND BY                                                                                Wed. Oct. 7th 2009.

We have a club rep attending  this critical meeting at 9:45 a.m. this morning regarding opening COUNTY road links in and around Galway Cavendish Harvey.

Whatever the outcome, a report will be made later on today.

MEETINGS REMINDER.                                                                            Tues. Oct. 6th 2009.

There are co-incidentally two meetings tomorrow .

1. Deposition to Peterborough Council to open COUNTY roads to link to the already approved Township roads.  (Please scroll back to BN story of Thursday Sept. 17th for details.)

If you can lend your support by attending, the meeting starts at 9:45 a.m. at the County Courthouse on Water St. in Peterborough.

2. Monthly KATVA Board of Directors meeting at 6:30 p.m. 2010 Little Britain Road.

FROM BULLER TO BOILER IN ONE EASY LESSON.                    Mon. Oct. 5th 2009.

Yesterday wardens were scoping out the Pinery's best kept secret when they happened to chat with a foursome from Buller.

"We're going to see if an historic site can be ready to add to Saturday's ride in the Pinery...Would you like to join us?" The avid club members replied... " We'd love to."  Off we went through the section of the Marsh Trail that is not too intimidating and after a short jaunt turned down a rather insignificant laneway.  We stopped to orient our eyes to the thick foliage, then pointed to a large dark object about 25 metres off the partially cut new trail.

Laying dormant for almost a 100 years was the massive boiler of Gillett's Sawmill. The boiler maker's name is still visible on the door. The well, right next to the boiler can still be seen as a large unprotected depression in the ground. This is why the trail cannot be made official until Risk Management signs are in place. Also scattered peacefully on the ground and covered in moss not far off are the ruins of the camp that held the workers in very primitive conditions.

The Forestry User's Advisory Group at a recent meeting in Burnt River announced that this will be named "The Heritage Trail".Once the loop is complete and Risk signs are in place it is our intention to have the CoKL declare this a Heritage site.

Buller?   That's another story.

YOUR BEST PHOTO COULD WIN THIS CONTEST.                        Sun. Oct. 4th 2009.

Now in its 8th year, the Kawartha Lakes Photo Contest is designed to encourage local and seasonal shutterbugs to capture wonderful memorable pictures throughout the season.

The 2009 categories are - its people, its places, its activities, and its landscape.

What better activity is there to capture the true spirit of our vast City than ATVing in our countryside. How many times have you wished your camera was in your daypack? Now is your big chance.
If you consider yourself a part or full time shutterbug, you can enter your images in the Kawartha Lakes Photo Contest 2009.

There are some rules and regulations, and cut off date is Oct 30.  You can find more details at the Kawartha Lakes website

PORKY'S BRIDGE STILL OFF LIMITS.                                                 Sat. Oct.3rd. 2009.

As of noon yesterday, we learned that the bridge on Twin Mountains S.C. Porcupine Trail (#420) is still closed for repairs.

Trail Boss Larry says," The trail itself has grown in since we carted in hemlock boards some years back. Taking in replacements will only happen when crews can brush out the trail to a width more suitable to the job at hand."  Larry then added. "We were surprised to find more damage to the bridge than we originally anticipated."

Our sawmill supplier states that once hemlock logs are sawn into lumber, they should be used within a week or they will dry out and become very difficult to drive a nail into.

For review please see Breaking News stories of Sun. Sept 20th and then Wed, Sept. 23rd.  2009.

KAWARTHA CYCLISTS TO PEDAL THE PINERY TOMORROW   Fri. Oct. 2nd 2009.

That's not all. We just learned that this is a major loop event called "RUBE-EH" and starts in Garnet Graham Park, Fenelon Falls at 0900 hrs. They travel north on the Rail Line to Burnt River Village, then joint up to the Pinery Trail at the new staging area provided by CoKL. ( 93 Pinery Rd.) From there it's up through the Pinery to  Monck Rd. (CR45) and then east to Kinmount. From there, the cyclists return south on the V.R.T.C. to their home base in Fenelon Falls. They should start arriving around 1400hrs.

Please be on the lookout for them as different skill levels mean they will spread out real quick.

Our ATV club has been asked to assist in the directions through the Pinery section. As always, we are standing by to help in any way we can.

"PEOPLE RIDING DIRT BIKES WILL BE EVERYWHERE."         Fri. Oct. 2nd 2009.

That's a direct quote from a well-seasoned participant who has done the circuit many times.

The 56th Annual Corduroy Enduro Event kicks off this Sat. Oct. 3rd and Sunday Oct. 4th From Gooderham. It takes the group through parts of Haliburton and also the famous Five Points trails.

All permits are in place from the MNR and duly posted along the route. Some years it involves short term road closures.

If you're in the area on either day please give them lots of space. Why not take your camera along to witness this spectacle. With the rain...the mud...and the puddles you're sure to have a worthwhile memento.

SNOWMOBILE CLUB GETS A NEW WEBSITE.                      Thurs. Oct. 1st. 2009.
Over the summer we have included some news on our website about the snowmobile season coming up soon. This has been undertaken by us while our neighbour to the east has been working on a new and straight-forward approach to what you have asked for all along... news updates and trail conditions on a website you can trust.

We now ask that you check out Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club's new website.  It has been work in progress and well worth the wait. It's clean...informative, and fresh as the first snowfall. Why not send them a congrats right now?

We will continue to submit Breaking News stories regarding important trail work in progress that affects us all in 5 Points area.

Reps. from Twin Mountains S.C. as well as reps from Kawartha ATV Club will be at the Bobcaygeon Fall Fair this weekend. Please drop by and shoot the breeze with us.

Here's a simple fact overlooked by many. Trails in the #400 series belong to Twin Mountains S.C. while trails in the #500 series belong to Buckhorn District S.C. _____________________________________________________________________________
DAILY BREAKING NEWS POSTINGS                                            Wed. Sept. 30th 2009.

There is plenty of good fall riding ahead of us, however relevant and interesting articles to write about are becoming harder to find. Over the course of the next month we may not post each and every day.

The Breaking News feature on our website however, will now concentrate on reporting about those half-dozen projects mentioned in earlier BN Reports.  Trail work is a time consuming job with unexpected delays and upsets when bad weather sets in. For this reason, reporting will take place only when significant progress is accomplished.

We will continue to post reminders of  rides, events and meeting dates one day before they happen.  Please click the Rides and Events button for the latest details.

HUNTING SEASON CURTAILS TRAIL WORK                             Tues. Sept. 29th 2009.

Twin Mountains S.C. is all set to do a massive re-route of the Loom Lake Trail in their jurisdiction of the 5 Points.  This section now covers rocky outcrops and boggy hollows that result in tricky ATVing for those who just want to get to Gooderham without a major incident.  In the winter this hampers grooming when not much snow is available to push around.

The MNR does not issue Work Permits during the hunting season for Crown Land projects of any kind.  If work starts soon, some progress will be made before hunting season but then the project must be put on hold until late November.

GREAT NEWS FOR SNOWMOBILERS.  (ATVs TOO)              Mon. Sept. 28th  2009.

At last Wednesday's Meeting of the Forest Users Advisory Group in Burnt River it was announced that Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club is about to re-align the criss-cross situation on Somerville 3rd line. This applies from the Rail Line east to Hyler Rd.

Sledding across this section of E108  can be difficult during certain winter conditions because the trail switches from one side of the road to the other. The work will commence immediately upon picking the dominant side for the trail.

I LOVE A (LINDSAY FALL FAIR) PARADE.                                     Sun. Sept. 27th   2009.

This picture speaks for itself. You're looking at three generations of an ATVing family that can hardly wait for the Parade to start.   Just ask young Tucker who we are sure is saying..."Poppa Frank... can we pleeease go now? I want to be in the parade too!
(editor note - sorry for this being posted late)

THE CITY WILL MATCH YOU DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR...    Sat. Sept. 26th 2009.

Just like the popular TV show "Restaurant Makeover", CoKL has announced funding for trail work on the Millennium Trail north of the Monck Road (CR45) as follows.

Here is the quote from Councillor Dave Hodgson Ward 3 as stated in the CoKL Regular Council Meeting of Tuesday Sept.8,2009.

Councillor Hodgson advised that "the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club (KLSC), The Kawartha Lakes ATV Association (KATVA)  and the Kawartha Lakes Trailriders (OFTR) have been successful in their application for a 50/50 split grant of $230,000 for improvements to the Millennium Trail." He stated that "The City's portion will be covered from the Forestry Reserve which is specifically for trails." A staff report on this matter will be coming forward to Council at the Sept. 22nd Council Meeting as well as the appropriate by-laws to approve this work.

(editor note - CoKL Council Meeting minutes are not for publication until read and adopted, which typically happens at the next council meeting.  As a result, items we publish from CoKL Council Meetings, will often be a month out.)

WHITE FROST COVERS  BURNT RIVER HAMLET.               Fri. Sept. 25th  2009.

Two club members checked out the Rail Line yesterday north of Burnt River.

"Recent rain and heavy frost kick-started the fall colours that we wait for each year."
"The forest is a contradiction of green, yellow, and red. It's all there waiting to be enjoyed but the clock is ticking."

Don't be in a hurry to get to Kinmount this time. Driving an ATV is a hands-on job.Take a thermos of tea and a few biscuits...stop...listen and enjoy.

CITY GETS $5G DONATION FROM KATVA                              Thurs. Sept. 24th 2009

Money in...money out. That's the true spirit of any Not-For-Profit organization.

It was announced at the monthly meeting of the City of Kawartha Lakes Forest User Group, Somerville Tract last night in Burnt River that Kawartha ATV  Association is no exception.

Club Directors Eric and Ray handed City of Kawartha Lakes a cheque on Tuesday for $5000. It is to be used for "rehab" and "re-route" of trails exclusively in the Somerville Tract. These trails are commonly referred to as being in The Pinery.

Trails need fill...trails need culverts...trails need tender loving care and your permit dollars will continue to make our system safe and user friendly.

BRIDGE BUSTER CULPRITS CONFESS.                                   Wed. Sept. 23rd. 2009.

Person or persons responsible for breaking through "Porky's Bridge" on Twin Mountains S.C. trail #420 have left their phone number with T.M.S.C. The event happened in the dark Friday night/Saturday morning.

"It's a wonder they didn't end up in Nogies Creek, truck and all," T.M.S.C. Trail Boss says. "Some of the side rails were snapped right off." The area is now completely roped off until replacement lumber can be delivered.

The offenders have been told a sizable bill for new Hemlock boards will be submitted to them upon completion of the restoration.

No word of a possible "Trespass to Property" charge has been received to date.

WARDEN STATS ARE OUT TO JULY 31st.                                Tues. Sept. 22nd 2009.
We thought you'd be pleased to learn that from May 1st. to July 31st. we had 16 wardens who logged 481 hours on the V.R.T.C.

They travelled a total of 4075 kms. and checked 396 ATVers whose permits were not clearly visible at first glance.

Also of interest is the fact that CoKL By-law officers will now randomly phone for a Trail Warden back-up when the Rail Line gets busy.

20 KM WALK OUT AVOIDED ON SATURDAY'S RIDE.             Mon. Sept.21st. 2009.

The buddy system kicked in big time during Saturday's popular 5 Points ride when one of our member's ATV started to overheat.

Unable to fix the problem with the fan onsite, it was decided to start a tow out. Equipped with emergency tow ropes, the owner's sister and trail guide Tony towed the ATV through the main sections. The owner managed the rough spots on his own when the engine cooled down.

" It was an extremely hot day for mid-September" Tony reports." Aside from one other minor overheating and the dust from lack of rain the event was enjoyed by all 18 members."

The long haul back to the staging area at Twin Mountains S.C. Groomer Shed at 2600 Bass Lake Rd. was completed without further incident.

BRIDGE OUT...URGENT...BRIDGE OUT...URGENT...           Sun. Sept.20th 2009

We just got a phone call that a vehicle of some sort tried to cross the bridge on Twin Mountains S.C. trail #420. It broke through at least 25 stringers and the bridge is impassable.

You may know the trail as the "Porcupine Trail". The bridge in question has also been referred to as "Porky's Bridge." There are private landowners on both sides so be forewarned and do not attempt to cross.

The landowner's gate is closed and locked. The trail starts from the south at E108 and from the north at Fire Route 397 on Crystal Lake Rd. Do not attempt to cross in the creek (Nogies) as you will be trespassing.

Please send this message to your ATV buddies that use the 5 Points or have them log onto our website for this message.

MARSH TRAIL GETS A BOOST WITH CITY'S HELP                    Sat. Sept.19th 2009.

Our star reporter Eric, sends in such complete notes, that here they are in his own words right off the press.

"Yesterday, (Thursday) I was at the east end of the Marsh Trail where it comes out to the Somerville 11th line. With the help of the City we now have a new entrance that comes out on the Rail Trail not the road.

The new entrance is not finished yet but is usable. It just needs top dressing and the signs moved before the old entrance will be closed. We ran out of time yesterday after 13 loads were delivered courtesy CoKL. Hopefully we can get it finished early next week."

(The map sign has been relocated. The warning sign can now be moved to the Millenium Trail.)

THANK YOU MOM AND DAD.                                                               Fri. Sept. 18th 2009

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who took the time to enrol their son or daughter in our "Youth Driver Training Course" offered during last weekend's Kawartha Powersports Show in Lindsay.

ATVs, like all motorized vehicles, command the respect of all drivers young and old. Now we can enjoy the company of your child who can be proud to ride right along beside the pros.

Please help us pass the word that these training sessions are an ongoing process. Anyone who wants to show their desire to become a responsible  rider can contact Marilyn at (705) 878-4016 or email rnesbitt@i-zoom.net to register for an upcoming course.

CONNECTIVITY WAS KEY AT GCH MEETING                          Thurs. Sept. 17th 2009

A deposition was successfully put forward by our Club Rep on Tuesday when our strengthening position with Galway/Cavendish/Harvey Township became even more evident.

We already have access to GCH township roads north of Pigeon Lake but they are fragmented by various County roads. This comes under the jurisdiction of Peterborough County.  Partial sections* of #36...#503...#507...#49 are all to be submitted for approval to give us those much needed links.

If you know these sections of county roads, they basically allow getting to the 5 Points Crown Land trails without having to trailer to a staging area.

GCH will support our deposition to the County of Peterborough on Oct. 7th. We also have a letter from Haliburton County stating that in the 5 years their roads have been open to ATVs, no negative reports of a significant nature have been received.

* Please remember the phrase "Partial Sections" Connectivity will be the key.

#36   Bobcaygeon to Hwy 28
#503 100 metres to CoKL boundary
#507 Flynn's Corners to boundary of Haliburton.
#49   Bobcaygeon to #121.

POPULAR 5 POINTS RIDE IS THIS SATURDAY                              Wed. Sept. 16th  2009
The 5 points is a vast area to get lost in if you don't know it. It has been signed over the years by Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club and Buckhorn District S.C. as well. Also KATVA and HATVA signs have sprung up to assist newcomers. The O.F.S.C. ( Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs) has been introducing blue destination signs but most only apply to the snowmobile season and lead to private property. Our last year's map will help but go with the pros.

Meet at Tim Horton's in Bobcaygeon at 9.00 a.m. Bring a lunch.  As always, If you plan to attend please confirm your attendance with the ride leader.  See the fact sheet under Rides and Events.

We hope all the mud didn't dry up from no rain in September. Bring bug spray ...the wasps are out and will be attracted to food smells.

TAC SEEKS GCH APPROVAL FOR KATVA AT PTBRO.              Tue. Sept. 15th 2009.

Our  Trails Advisory Committee Rep goes to Galway Cavendish Harvey Council this afternoon on behalf of Kawartha ATV Association. The purpose of this deposition is to ask for their endorsement in printed form to Peterborough Council to open key COUNTY roads to link the GCH Township roads for which we have already been approved.

The Peterborough Council meeting is Oct. 7th (Co-incidentally it's the same day as our next Board Meeting.)

Our Board chose the best Director who picked the best enclosed trailer with the best specifications for the best price from the best dealer (local).

What's important?
  • It must be long enough to load two ATVs when needed... It is.
  • It must hold all our club's belonging in storage or on the way to an event...It does.
  • It must have an awning to serve members with info and snacks at all those fund raising locations... It will.
  • It must have smooth sides (no rivets) for banner wraps and dealer sponsor ads. Oh ya!

The dealer?   Bob English Trailer Sales Lindsay.
The Brand?   Sure-Trac
The website? www.sure-trac.com.

BRIDGES WISH LIST - GOES TO COUNCIL                                  Sat. Sept. 12th    2009.

Our hard working Past Pres. Steve Lane will make a deposition to CoKL Council on Tuesday Sept.22nd. We, as a club want to keep the Council members aware that in the long run, bridges should be built for ATVs and snowmobiles across the Scugog River at the "old pillars" and also on Highway 7.

Please attend if possible to show your support.

ATTENTION... SNOWMOBILERS ONLY!                                          Fri. Sept. 11th   2009

New Landowner agreement gets major trail loop back.

Older sledders will remember going east from #400 (The Bobcaygeon Trail) at Settler's Crossing out to Bass Lake Rd. and then crossing a bridge (Cedar Rapids Trail)  to continue east out to Ledge Rd. then south on Quarry Rd. crossing CR36 and ending up at Oak Shores Marina.

Well...it's all back thanks to a sleddin' landowner. The trail is currently # 410 but the entire length will now be called trail #435. It replaces other numbers along the way to keep it simple. An added bonus will be a shorter way to see the view from Tye's Mountain once you hit the Ledge Rd. segment.

As always, this is a sneak peak and confirmation will follow once Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club's website is activated for the winter sledding season.

FOUND                                                                                                    Thurs. Sept. 10th  2009.

One of our loyal members found a kick start last Saturday Sept. 5th around 11 a.m.for either a dirt bike or a Raptor style ATV as you enter the Pinery from our new staging area at #93 Pinery Rd.  Same can be claimed by contacting him.

WHAT'S WITH THE CLEAR CUT ON MONCK ROAD?           Thurs. Sept 10th   2009

If you get anywhere near the intersection of Monck Rd. (CR45) and Pinery Road you can't miss the gaping hole on the south side of Monck Rd. and running east and west from Pinery Road. We get asked about it all the time. All trees were cut back about a 100 feet to let in the sun and prepare for the stabilization of the newly resurfaced section of CR45.

Mother nature did a fine job of growing the trees. They got tall, they got thick, they got too close to the road and they put too much shade on the roadway and so they got cut back. The surface had deteriorated at an alarming rate.

The logs were sold and the City broke even on the deal according to a CoKL source.

ATV ONBOARD DOCUMENTS FADE AWAY.                                  Wed. Sept.9th 2009.

When was the last time you unzipped that little damp and dusty bag of papers tucked away in the dark depths of your ATV storage box?

A warden's report finds that  a member was about to renew his permit but the Insurance policy number was unreadable. It was in his possession but looked rather limp and anaemic. As a former member we had it on file but in another club's catchment area things could spell trouble.

Treat yourself to a new ziplock bag.

KATVA GENERAL MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT                     Tues. Sept. 8th 2009.

Now is the time to renew acquaintances with Board Members and fellow KATVers.

The major fall riding season is upon us and you'll want to play catch up on the inner workings of your Board of Directors. Much has been in the works as reported over the weeks here on Breaking News and much more will unfold at the meeting.

Place.... Pioneer Baptist Church.
Location.... Norland.
Time....7  p.m. to 9.00 p.m.
Directions.... The church looks more like a meeting hall than a church. It's on the west side of Hwy. 35 in Norland just north of CR45 and you'll spot it right beside the Esso Station.

Hope to see you there.

IMPORTANT COUNCIL MEETING TOMORROW                          Mon. Sept. 7th  2009.
Two deputations will be presented to CoKL council that will affect our trails.
One is from the President of K.L.S.C.(Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club.)
The other is from a representative of the O.F.T.R. (Ontario Federation of Trail Riders.)

Both these men had their pictures in the Lindsay Post with our Council rep and M.P. in Kinmount last week. There is some Government funding coming our way and it will be interesting to hear the outcome. We assume at this point that they will "pitch" our trail upgrade programs. A report will be forthcoming here on Breaking News.

The meeting starts at 1.00 p.m. but the schedule is not available at this time.

WHY DO I KEEP CROSSING PINERY ROAD?                               Mon. Sept. 7th  2009.

If all you ever do is ride the Rail Line, you'll keep wondering about this Pinery Road Double Cross.  Then, when you go into the Pinery Trail it dumps you back onto Pinery Road then back in again to the Pinery Trail. And so on.

We crisscross Pinery Road on a  regular basis as it wanders north from Burnt River Rd. past the staging area at #93 all the way up to the Monck Rd.(CR45) for a total of 8.7 kms.  It was opened in 1928 to access the Somerville Tract of the Victoria Forest for tree planting, fighting forest fires, and hauling logs from various Compartments of Red, White, and Scot's Pine.

It is in these compartments that logging roads were opened and from these, we regularly cross Pinery Road.

This map will give you a basic overview so now you can take this off your list of things to ponder.

READ THE FINE PRINT                                                                        Sun. Sept. 6th  2009

New By-law signs developed by the CoKL are being installed at gated entry points all along Pinery Rd that lead into the Pinery Forest trails. Many are easily visible from a car as you drive south from The Monck Rd. ( Hwy #45.) on Pinery Rd.  The gates are locked and concrete abuttments are in place to keep out non-authorized users.

The short list of authorized users covers snowmobiles with proper permit ...ATVs with proper permit...and dirt bikes with proper permit. [It is our understanding that the City has authorized the OFTR (Ontario Federation of Trail Riders) to be the host for dirt bike use.]

If you know of anyone who does not belong to a registered association tell them they will be trespassing and face a fine issued by By-law officers who have added the Pinery Forest trails to their list of regular patrols.

The silhouette icons of a Snowmobile, an ATV, and a Dirt bike are presented with a red slash but the fine print reads "Except with permits on designated trails"

The CoKL  By-law in effect is 2006-147 (Section 7.00)

O.P.P. QUOTE OF THE YEAR                                                             Sat. Sept. 5th    2009

"Will I stop you? Yes. Will I ticket you? I might"

This was a friendly gesture to let all ATVers know that the police are willing to work with us up to a point. Laws enabling ATVers to use certain roads are in place. We're not talking basic MTO stuff here, just common sense when on the road.

First and foremost. Get on our website under Road By-Laws for a basic feeling of what our Board
of Directors has accomplished.

Secondly. Don't ride double on any road. A good example is the V.R.T.C. link through Fenelon Falls. It's a sensitive issue when it comes to gettin' through town. We tell 2 uppers "Take a chance? Risk a ticket." (The walk through Fenelon is only 1.3 kms.)

Thirdly. Don't let kids steer anywhere. The Rail Line is not a playground. One warden report talks
of a By-Law ticket issued for the above. We don't know the amount but nothing is less than $200.

Finally. Are you still riding without a rear-view mirror? Picture this scenario.

The O.P.P. is behind you with blue and red lights flashing and you just keep going on your merry old way. To make matters worse your licence plate is covered in mud and so are your back lights. Riding ("I was just visiting my neighbour") without wearing your helmet?

O.P.P.Quote... "Will I stop you? Yes. Will I ticket you? "Driver's license and ownership please sir."

BIG CYCLING EVENT ON COUNTY ROADS                                   Fri.  Sept. 4th   2009

Listed in the CoKL website under Events we noticed a major bicycle event happening on Saturday Sept. 5th.(tomorrow).

It is the 6th Annual Kawartha Classic Cycling Tour.  Because we now share some roads it is important to expect cyclists everywhere. They have right of way on the road and we are required to use the shoulder where available.

If we kick up dust while trying to pass, there will be repercussions.

YIKES...   WE GOT A REGISTERED LETTER.                            Thurs. Sept. 3rd. 2009

This would scare a veteran ATVer of Class 5 trails. Fact is that registering a letter is a formality to ensure that the recipient has received it. The mail piece has to be signed by the recipient.

In our case, the letter was from the logging/quarry operators working from the bottom of the escarpment at Bass Lane. They want to formally announce that their trucks will be using Bass Lane weekdays from Monday to Friday.

Bass Lane as you may know is our entry to the 5 Points as we cross Hwy 49 from Somerville 3rd.  in the CoKL.

It's another case of Risk Management in action and should be taken under advisement by all KATVers.

NEW WELCOME SIGN AT BOUNDARY RD.                                   Tue, Sept 1st, 2009

As riders come down from Haliburton,  they now have a proper welcome sign as they enter the City of Kawartha Lakes, at Boundary Rd. north of Kinmount.

It has both Summer and Winter Hosts, complete with corporate logos.

The same backboard has been used and the cost for new lettering was a mere $39.54.
